On August 4, 1892, at 92 2nd Street in Fall River, Massachusetts, Andrew Borden (age sixty-nine) and his second wife, Abby Durfee Gray Borden (age sixty-four), were found dead of multiple wounds inflicted by a sharp-edged hacking instrument judged to be some type of axe or hatchet.
Abby Borden was found upstairs lying facedown on the floor of a guest bedroom of the family home, the victim of nineteen blows to the head.
Downstairs, Andrew Borden was discovered in the sitting room, slumped on a divan, the victim of eleven similar blows to his face and head.
Their youngest daughter, Lizzie, was tried for their murders. Lizzie was found not guilty on June 20, 1893, and no one else was ever tried for the crime.
A hundred and thirty years later, we are still left to wonder...did Lizzie Borden take an axe and give her mother twenty whacks?
