It was in servants’ quarters of Austin’s white citizens that the killer dubbed the Servant Girl Annihilator began his gruesome series of murders on December 30, 1884. Before he disappeared into the ether after the last murders on Christmas Eve 1885, six women, one man, and one child were dead and at least three women and two men were seriously wounded.
The murders all took place at night. Female victims were dragged from their beds into their yards where they were raped and hacked to death with an axe-like tool. In a ritual fashion, the seven female victims sustained wounds from various sharp implements in their ears and about their heads. While other attacks have been considered as possibly the work of the Annihilator, only these thirteen people are generally accepted as the Annihilator’s victims.
The year-long reign of terror upended the city of Austin. Yet, despite multiple arrests, the killer was never brought to justice.
I began researching the Annihilator murders in the course of writing Hell to Pay. I became so fascinated with the story that I have spent the past three years learning about the people who were his victims for a true crime book about the murders that will be coming out soon.
In the bonus materials for Hell to Pay, you can read the actual 1885 newspaper articles describing the crimes and read the autopsy report for Susan Hancock, the killer’s seventh victim.
You'll also get TWO bonus chapters that show you exactly what Iris was doing when she interviewed witnesses off the page then just reported the information to Sean and her fathers.
